The McCoy Gallery needed elements for their upcoming gallery show: “The Space Between Things.” This included various posters, a show write-up, social media outreach, and art plaques.

The show looked to talk about the idea of ‘space;’ between objects, time, and people. Featuring three female artists from the Boston area, the curator wanted branding that reflected the unique individuality that their work brought to the McCoy Gallery and the message of the show.
The challenge was to combine the individuality of the show and the required branding guidelines that Merrimack College requires from all campus-based events. With one available typeface to work on (Gotham), and 4 colors (black, grey, navy blue, and gold), my solution was as follows:
The poster was designed on a heavy black to represent the negative, dark aspects of space that draw the eye in. The type is in white, to contrast the darkness of the background. Using Gotham, I utilized various versions of the typeface (bold, italic, thin, black, etc.) to give the show some uniqueness.
The various circles throughout the poster reflect the idea of ‘space’ that the show looks to discuss. With circles further away, just barely touching, or completely overlapping, the meaning of ‘space’ is depicted as a fluid and ever-changing subject idea.
The circles motif was a continuous image between all modes of communication: IG posts, posters, show write-ups, and artist plaques.
