“salon-style” art installation
The McCoy Art Gallery had two issues: First, there were various pieces of art in the back closet of the gallery that hadn’t been displayed in years. Second, there was a 2-month span in the gallery schedule in which nothing was planned. My task was to create a gallery design which utilized as many pieces as possible for the duration of that time block.

While I was in the position of Assistant Curator of the McCoy Gallery, I designed a French salon-style gallery that displayed most, if not all, of the artwork that was found in the back closet of the gallery. Most of these works were untitled and unknown, so the pieces were displayed based on size, colors, and subjects.
The east wall displayed the “My Dream” triptych, framed by other pieces that highlighted shape-making and line work (a heavy theme throughout the initial triptych).
The west wall used the large pink and orange triptych and was surrounded by images that played with color.
The south wall showcased the two largest pieces found in the closet, which helped create a larger feel in the gallery. The four paintings that surround it follow the same color palettes that the two large paintings do.
This is a collection of art from over 75 years, which vary from student and faculty art to professional donations and purchases. The art also varies from photography, oil paintings, collage, dyed paper and fabric, ink, lithography, and more.
The show was up in the McCoy Gallery from April 5th until September 12, 2021.
