artist statement:

Metamerism, among variations, is defined as "a phenomenon that occurs when two colors appear to match under one lighting condition, but not when the light changes.” This piece expands on the expression of change in an individual, and the idea of "masking" the true individual, who is only discovered under different conditions. Vanessa means "butterfly" in Greek; I used butterflies throughout my piece to express the idea of change and metamorphosis. If a viewer interacts with this piece, they will find the change of colors, and a more realistic image of a person. Inspiration was taken from surrealist artists, exploring the use of meaningful objects to express a story. It speaks to those who struggle with expressing themselves, to those who emotionally feel they have never been able to be themselves-- unless under the right conditions. Metamerism finds itself in an ever changing state, as displayed within a personality and in an artistic piece.

To interact: use your phone and turn on “Invert Colors (Classic)” and point your camera to the piece.
