artist statement:

Through this piece, I am expressing myself coming out of my shell. As someone who was afraid to be themselves and kept quiet and conceded in middle school, a big part of this was caused by the bullying I faced, high school and graphic design have helped me to change for the better. Through my work, I haven’t been afraid to show my interests and incorporate who I am into my work, and using the inspiration of surrealism for this specific piece helped express the “sprouting of my true self,” someone who is now undoubtedly them. I also wanted to show the element of movement in this piece, and I accomplished this through a unique concept of flowers. The colors and variety of the flowers give the feeling of comfort and love. The girl who felt like her life was in black and white is now becoming a stronger and more confident young adult.
